ESAs (Shapefile) ESAs represent places in Alberta that are important to the long-term maintenance of biological diversity, soil, water or other natural processes, at multiple spatial scales. They are identified as areas containing rare or unique elements in the province, or areas that include elements that may require special management consideration due to their conservation needs. ESAs do not represent government policy and are not necessarily areas that require legal protection but instead are intended to be an information tool to help inform land use planning and policy at local, regional and provincial scales. Protected Areas (Shapefile) Protected areas digital data is available in ArcView shape file format. This data set includes legislated protected areas as established by Order-in-Council. Protected Area Announcements – LARP Conservation and Recreation Tourism Areas Shapefile (2012-08-22) The Government of Alberta approved the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP) on August 22, 2012, making it the first regional plan to be completed under Alberta’s Land Use Framework. Among the highlights were the announcement that four new Wildland Parks and nine new Provincial Recreation Areas will be set aside under the Provincial Parks Act, as soon as practicable. This dataset, available through AESRD’s Land Use Framework website includes these conservation and recreation area commitments.
