More information

Just half an hour south of the TransCanada Highway, the Cypress Hills rise gently, climbing 600 metres above the surrounding prairies. The Cypress Hills have a unique climate and mix of forests, wetlands and grasslands. This high plateau is home to an astonishing diversity of plants and animals.

Campgrounds are open year-round throughout the park. You can also relax in one of our resort lodges.

  • Enjoy a quiet stroll along a lake.
  • Go fishing.
  • Discover the Dark Sky Preserve.
  • Try to spot moose, elk, deer and wild turkeys - all in the same day!
  • Explore more than 50 km of trails - on foot, mountain bike, snowshoe or cross-country skis.

Most facilities in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park-Alberta are concentrated along the south shore of Elkwater Lake in Elkwater townsite. Elkwater is located just off highway #41.  Facilities include:

  • the Visitor Centre (open year-round)
  • seven campgrounds with over 350 individual campsites
  • a resort lodge, restaurants, gas station, convenience stores, mini-golf and more in the townsite

There are also three smaller campgrounds with more than 50 sites, viewpoints and hiking trails scattered throughout the hills.
