Scheduled Teacher Workshops In Kananaskis Country

Bear Safety 101

Description   

Are you new to teaching environmental and outdoor education? Do you want to get your students outside but you're nervous about wildlife? Have you ever wondered what it is really like to use bear spray?  This workshop is your opportunity to spend the day with a conservation officer, biologist and educator as we explore the world of bears. Join us as we investigate bear biology, bear safety, games and resources available to teachers to promote bear safety.  All participants have the opportunity to be trained using inert bear spray.  This workshop also includes a hike to a location accessible for your students.

Notes

A minimum of 10 participants is required for this workshop.

Winter Safety & Ecology

Description

What does an avalanche report really tell you? What can be interpreted from snow pits? How does the science of snow relate to Kananaskis Country's wildlife? Join us on snowshoes as we safely explore winter in the mountains.  We meet up with a park safety specialist, biologist and educator.  You get to explore the beacon basin and a possible field trip location while practicing winter safety practices.  Participants also engage in a variety of winter educational games and activities supporting outdoor education and winter ecology field trips.  Note that snowshoes are NOT provided for this program.

Written in Stone: Teach Your Planet Earth Unit in Kananaskis Country

Description

Join an environmental education specialist and a local geologist for a profile of a full-day, teacher-directed field trip from Calgary.   We walk you through suggested stops in the Kananaskis Valley. All related student activities are profiled in a teacher's resource package and student workbook. This has been a popular student field trip for over 30 years.  The program continues to meet curricular expectations for the Grade 7 Planet Earth unit.

Connecting Students with the Outdoors: Infusing Environmental Education into Your School

Description

We'll come to your school to inspire teachers to incorporate environmental education techniques into programs of studies. Activities, games and strategies will be presented that can easily be facilitated in your schoolyard. This session also acts as an excellent team-building exercise for staff.

Let's Make it Happen! Everything You Need to Explore Alberta Parks with Your Students

Description

Bring a Kananaskis Country environmental education specialist into your school to help empower teachers to explore Alberta's parks with students. We'll discuss opportunities, locations and activities.  We'll even provide curriculum-linked lesson plans for teachers. Topics can include life cycles, plants, trees, wetlands, biodiversity, bears, weather, interactions and ecosystems, water, population change and more. We help make taking your students outside as easy as possible.

Time

Teacher-led Field Programs 

School Group Permit

  • Schools (Kindergarten to Grade 12) are required to have a School Group Permit IF conducting a program WITHOUT the assistance of Kananaskis County environmental education staff.
  • Some trails in Kananaskis Country have group size limits, either 15 people or 35 people. 
  • All  schools or groups doing independent field trips should confirm group size limits before applying for a permit.
  • Check the specific trail for a group size limit.  The group size limit is also included in the detailed trail descriptions under Trails.
  • Some trails have different group size limits for different sections of the trail.  If the "Group Size Limit" states "15/35", please contact the Guiding/Instructing Permits Coordinator for clarification at Tammi.Rees@gov.ab.ca or 403-851-2207
