Winter Survivors: Snow, Shelter & Safety

Experience winter like never before in this full-day, snowshoe-based program in the heart of the Crown of the Continent! Students investigate the science of snow through hands-on snow pit studies, practice safe winter travel, and explore how people survive in cold mountain environments. With shelter-building, fire-lighting, and terrain awareness, this program blends outdoor skills, snow science, and the magic of a true winter landscape. It’s an active, hands-on mountain adventure your class won’t forget.

Themes: Everyone can learn skills and techniques to increase their safety while travelling in winter mountain environments.  
Avalanches are unique winter safety phenomena which require a matched level of knowledge, skills, and attitude.  
Snowpack variability is monitored by avalanche forecasters and snow scientists which impacts winter safety in the mountains.  
Travelling on snowshoes is a fun and safe winter activity when you understand terrain and are dressed for the weather.
