Boreal Forest

Peace Athabasca Delta Sub-region

• Much of this internationally significant sub-region is within Wood Buffalo National Park
• All 3 Natural Landscape Type targets are achieved in Wood Buffalo National Park. Very small areas of 2 provincially protected areas are also in this Subregion.

Northern Mixedwood Sub-region

• This sub-region is well represented within the parks and protected areas network.
• All eight Natural Landscape Type targets have been achieved primarily in Wood Buffalo National Park and the northeast corner of Carbou Mountains Wildland Park.

Central Mixedwood Sub-region

• There is excellent representation of all 11 Natural Landscape Types that define the environmental diversity of the Central Mixedwood Subregion
• All 48 Natural Landscape Components are similarly well represented in the parks system.

Dry Mixedwood Sub-region

• The Dry Mixedwood Subregion is the only Boreal Forest Subregion that does not have excellent representation in Alberta's parks system.
• Only one of the 11 Natural Landscape Type targets has been achieved - protected slope. All Natural Landscape Type themes have some level of representation.
• There are still significant shortfalls in the glacial lakebed, ground moraine, sand plain, dune field and valley floor/stream themes.

Lower Boreal Highlands Sub-region

• There is excellent representation of all of Natural Landscape Types of this Subregion in Alberta's parks system.

Upper Boreal Highlands Sub-region

• There is excellent representation of all of the landscapes of the Upper Boreal Highlands Sub-region in Alberta's parks system.

Boreal Sub-arctic Sub-region

• All five Natural Landscape Types that define this Subregion have excellent representation within Caribou Mountains Wildland Park and Wood Buffalo National Park.

Athabasca Plain Sub-region

• Seven Natural Landscape types, along with 21 Natural Landscape Components, describe the landscape diversity of the Athabasca Plain.
• All the broad Natural Landscape Types have excellent representation in the parks system.
• Based on reconnaissance studies, the more specific Natural Landscape Components are also well represented.
• The protected areas in this Subregion contain many special features as well.
