Recreational Use of UAVs in Alberta Parks

In Alberta’s provincial parks, the use of any drone, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), regardless of size, is prohibited for recreational use.

Research or Commercial Use of UAVs in Alberta Parks

An application can be made for the take-off and landing of UAVs to support commercial uses or research purposes within Provincial Parks, Provincial Recreation Areas, and Wildland Provincial Parks.

You must apply for permission through Alberta Parks Research and Collections Permit, Filming and Photography Permit, or directly with a Parks Land Use Officer for any other purpose (e.g., related to a disposition).

The applicant must submit a completed application before the merit review process can begin. Submission of a completed application does not guarantee approval as all applications will be assessed against applicable requirements, operational considerations, and potential impacts before a decision is made.

A complete application shall include but is not limited to:

• Justification for the need of the operation
• Copy of an Advanced Pilots licence or a Special Flight Operations Certificate (basic pilot’s licences will not be considered)
• Drone model and registration number
• Description of the operation
• Geographical Boundaries of the operation (include map)
• Drone System Limitations
• Proof of Liability Insurance covering the risk of public liability ($1,000,000)
