In October 2009, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation proposed transferring Hoodoos Provincial Recreation Area to the Town of Drumheller for its continued operation as a public recreation site. Feedback was gathered during a 60 day online public comment period that ended December 12, 2009. The province took all comments into consideration before making a decision. As the hoodoos landforms are located on adjacent Crown land, the transfer of the site will not impact their use or protection. The hoodoos will remain a provincial historical resource protected under the Historical Resources Act.
Hoodoos PRA is a day use site located in south central Alberta within the Town of Drumheller. As a former Alberta Transportation wayside, it provides a resting area for travelers and access to the hoodoos landforms located on adjacent Crown land.
Hoodoos PRA has been operated by the Town of Drumheller for approximately 15 years. The province transferred administration and operation of this site to the town in 2002 and is proposing to follow through on the final transfer of the PRA to the town.
As part of the Plan for Parks, TPR has committed to
clarifying the park system and providing quality park experiences
for all Albertans. The transfer of sites such as Hoodoos PRA to the
municipality allows them greater flexibility to offer local and
regional recreation and tourism opportunities, while allowing TPR
to focus resources at sites that can provide greater recreation
and/or conservation opportunities at a provincial scale.
