Lakeland PRA - Pinehurst Expansion

Decision for Pinehurst Lake campground expansion within Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area

As part of our commitment in the Plan for Parks to create additional recreational opportunities for Albertans and to generate opportunities to upgrade and develop additional campgrounds and facilities, Alberta Parks proposed to redevelop and expand the Pinehurst Lake Campground within Lakeland Provincial Recreation Area (PRA).

Lakeland PRA is located approximately 50 km south and east of the Town of Lac La Biche, approximately 250 km northeast of Edmonton. Pinehurst Lake is located on the southernmost end of the PRA.  The Pinehurst campground is located on the southern shore of Pinehurst Lake, and the proposed area for redevelopment is located approximately 300-metres east of the existing campground.

Feedback on this proposal was gathered during a 60-day online public comment period that ended September 16th, 2013. The province took all comments into consideration along with historical and environmental reviews, before making a decision.  Alberta Parks would like to thank everyone who provided feedback on the proposal.

Resulting Decision

Alberta Parks has made the decision to move forward with this proposal to expand the Pinehurst Lake Campground within Lakeland PRA. Construction on this project will begin this summer.

The Pinehurst Lake Campground is a popular destination for visitors and the existing facilities are unable to meet increasing recreational demand. The expansion will include approximately 100 rustic campsites designed to fit modern recreational vehicles. The expansion will also include vault toilets, parking lot, playground and beach access. The existing Pinehurst campground would be converted into a day use area and will include picnic areas and fire pits, a picnic shelter, playground, a boat launch and parking.

This decision is based on First Nation and Public consultation input.

If there are any further questions about the project, please contact Mrs. Jennifer Okrainec, Planner, Northeast Region 780-623-5435.
