As part of our ongoing commitment to provide quality recreational opportunities and keep Albertans informed, Alberta Parks is providing notice of changes to infrastructure at Sulphur Gates Provincial Recreation Area. 

Alberta Parks is undertaking a three-year project to redevelop existing infrastructure to meet the needs of different user groups.  This notification is for phase 1 of the project. Targeted stakeholder consultation will occur in the winter of 2017/2018 to gather input into phase 2 and 3 of the project.

The project outline is as follows:

Phase 1 (2017)

• Refurbish day use area (maintain campsites temporarily)
• Construct equestrian parking adjacent to the commercial equestrian parking area (establish temporary equestrian campsites)
• Eliminate all equestrian activities in day use area

Phase 2 (2018)

• Construct Equestrian camping area
• Construct RV camping area
• Construct nature-based playground

Phase 3 (2019)

• Refurbish commercial equestrian area
• Refurbish equestrian trail that by-passes day use area
• Construct walking trails from RV campground to viewing platforms
• Establish parking area for Mount Stern/Lightning Ridge

Project Construction for phase 1 will begin in August 2017.
