Alberta Parks has been a part of Alberta's history for 80 years and we are very proud of the close relationship we have with our surrounding communities throughout the Province.
Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park is made up of a number of islands located in Lac La Biche. The park is located in northeast Alberta, located approximately 11km northeast of the town of Lac La Biche.
With the long and colorful history of Lac La Biche and the use of the islands on the lake, Alberta Parks is proposing to name one of the islands within Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park after the late Lac La Biche resident, Mr.Tom Maccagno. Mr. Maccagno was a life-long supporter in preserving the natural beauty of the Lac La Biche area and a number of local organizations and supporters have indicated their support and desire to honour him by naming an island after him. While the name of the island is proposed to change to Maccagno Island, the name of the park itself would not change.
Mr. Maccagno was an influential and vocal supporter of Provincial protected areas, especially those in the Lac La Biche region. He sat on the Lakeland Provincial Park Public Advisory Committee, nominated the Garner Fen for protection as a natural area during the Special Places 2000 program, provided information on 14 orchid species for the Alberta Parks book Orchids of Lakeland, reported on rare plant species on the islands within Lac La Biche, and was also influential and the main community driver in seeing the islands in Lac La Biche being protected and added into Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. Mr. Maccagno passed away on January 7th, 2012.
Alberta Parks believes that this should be a locally decided initiative as there is considerable knowledge and attachment to the islands within Lac La Biche.
