Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation (TPR) has recently expanded Simonette River Provincial Recreation Area by adding the adjacent bed and shore of Simonette River to the park.
Simonette River Provincial Recreation Area (PRA) is located between Grande Prairie and Valleyview, 10 kilometres south of Highway 43 on the Forestry Trunk Road. It is a popular camping and day use area, with its main attraction being the large sandy beach with access to Simonette River for water-based recreational activities.
The addition of the river's bed and shore to Simonette River PRA will help support efforts to enforce Provincial Parks Actregulations on the beach, and will provide a safer environment for family-oriented activities.
Through the public consultation for the draft Grande Prairie Region Parks Management Plan in the winter and spring of 2009, the public had the opportunity to provide input regarding the proposal to add the bed and shore of Simonette River to Simonette River PRA. All comments received indicated strong support.
