In February 2009, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation proposed removing two parcels of land from Sylvan Lake Provincial Park: a portion of the lakebed and shore in front of Cha-teau Suites and a parcel of land known as "Centennial Park". Feedback was gathered during a 60 day online public comment period that ended April 18, 2009. The province took all comments into consideration before making a decision. Lakebed and Shore Parcel:
Concern:
- Concern that the lakebed and shore parcel would not be accessible to the public once removed from the provincial park or would be used for private or commercial development.
- Concern that the lakebed and shore should be preserved for public, water-based recreation.
Response:
- Once removed from the provincial park, the 150 metre wide section of lakebed and shore will be managed as public land by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.
- As public land, the lakebed and shore will remain accessible to the public and be managed consistent with the rest of Sylvan Lake, where public, water-based recreation is supported.
- Any future development would require approval from the province as well as the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans and would need to adhere to the bylaws and development restrictions of the Town of Sylvan Lake.
"Centennial Park" Parcel:
Concern:
- Concern with the ability of the town to manage "Centennial Park" in the public interest and that public recreation access would be lost or restricted.
- Concern the "Centennial Park" lands would be used for commercial or private development once removed from the provincial park.
Response:
- Once "Centennial Park" is transferred to the Town of Sylvan Lake, a caveat will be placed on the title to ensure the land continues to be used for public recreation purposes. The caveat will not allow for the sale or development of the lands for private or commercial purposes.
