Miquelon Lake Provincial Park

Alberta Parks

Winter Recreation

Miquelon Lake Provincial Park is a fantastic place to get outside in the winter. The park is open for camping and day use activities. Come prepared for the weather and frequently changing winter conditions. Vault toilets remain open in the park but may not be stocked with toilet paper, so please bring your own. Weather and snow conditions may limit certain activities.

Please remember to obey all traffic laws and posted signage and use public access areas of the park only.

    Winter Trails

    • Walkers can enjoy plowed trails near the Park Centre and into Campground Loop A. These trails are the most accessible for anyone using strollers or mobility aids. Trails may not be cleared after a recent snowfall, as they are not maintained daily. Park at the Park Centre.
    • Cross country ski trail maintenance begin in December, as snow conditions permit. Trails will be set starting from the Park Centre and loop from the Shoreline Path into Camping Loop C. If you are looking for more cross-country skiing opportunities nearby, please visit Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area.
    • Snowshoeing is available on backcountry trails, Holdsworth Trail and the Shoreline Path. Please avoid trails set with cross country ski tracks.
    • Fat Bikes are allowed across the trail system but might be best enjoyed on the backcountry trails. Please avoid trails set with cross country ski tracks.
    • Remember to share the trail and do not walk on the tracks set for cross-country skiing.
    • Park staff maintain trails as conditions allow. The backcountry trails are occasionally groomed but not track-set. Trails in the Day Use Area will be cleared, and some will be track-set for cross-country skiing.
    • Updates can be found on the Trail Report

Skating and Ice Sports Zone in Group Use 6

Opening in December 2025, as weather conditions permit.

    • A large ice rink will be open for skating and for hockey in Group Use Area 6. Ice is resurfaced weekly.
    • New ice sport: Crokicurl is a mix of the game crokinole and curling. Play in teams of 1-4 people. Rules and equipment are provided on site.
    • New ice sport: Hockey Putt is like mini-golf, but with hockey sticks and pucks instead! Rules and equipment are provided on site.
    • A picnic shelter is open with a small wood stove to generate heat.  A large outdoor firepit and picnic tables are also available. Firewood is provided but is not guaranteed. Bring your own fire-starting equipment and extinguish properly after use. All amenities are first-come, first-served.
    • Pit/Vault toilets are open.

    Dark Sky Viewing

    • Miquelon Lake Provincial Park is within the Beaver Hills Biosphere Dark Sky Preserve. Wide open day-use areas and expansive views past the lake to the north and west reward nighttime visitors with unobstructed dark sky viewing, and maybe a chance to see the aurora borealis.
    • The Hesje Observatory’s provides weekly nighttime drop-in events for a guided experience of learning about the stars and getting a chance to see far into the universe! The observatory is operated by the University of Alberta and is separate from Alberta Parks. View their website for more information and contact details.

    Birding & Wildlife

    • Miquelon Lake is a birdwatcher's paradise. Over 200 species of birds can be found here, although that number drops considerably in the winter. The park is designated as one of Canada's Important Bird Areas. Download our Birding Checklist.
    • Take advantage of the long nights and try to hear or spot one of the park’s nocturnal animals. The park is an important nesting ground for the great horned owl. And if you’re lucky, you may even spot the elusive northern flying squirrel!
    • During spring and fall migrations, ducks and other waterfowl congregate regularly on the lakes and ponds.
    • Snow creates an opportunity to learn more about animal behaviour, even if you never actually see them. Learn to identify tracks of different animals and then see if you can follow their trail. But remember to always stay a safe distance from wild animals, for your safety and theirs. Read more about Wildlife Safety here.

    Park Centre

    • The Park Centre and the Aspen Room do not have regular winter hours and are open on a reservation basis only. Visit the Facility Rentals page for more information.
