Where: Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park , Highway 742 between the Grassi Lakes turnoff and the top of the hill (dam)

A section of the Spray Lakes Road/Highway 742/Smith-Dorrien Trail on the Canmore Hill is closed in both directions between the Grassi Lakes turnoff and the top of the hill (dam) due to a rockslide.

Travel is prohibited for all road users including vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians to ensure public safety. A rockslide has resulted in dangerous conditions for all road users. Unsupported rock remains above the road and could result in a second slide. As area assessments are ongoing, the timeline for repairs and reopening remains uncertain. Please respect all closures and stay clear of the area.

This closure affects access to several day use areas in Peter Lougheed and Spray Valley Provincial Park (including Grassi Lakes Day Use), Spray Lakes West Campground, as well as Ha Ling Peak, Miner's Peak, East End of Rundle (EEOR), and Goat Creek trailheads. These areas can still be accessed via Highway 40 South and the open portion of the Spray Lakes Road/Highway 742/Smith-Dorrien Trail northbound via Peter Lougheed Provincial Park but visitors should be prepared for longer travel times.

Aggressive cow elk – cow elk can become aggressive this time of year as they are calving and are protective of newborn calves.

Although a warning is in place for these areas, elk can be encountered anywhere at any time. Minimize your chance of conflict with elk:

• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Keep your pet on a leash at all times.
• Keep at least 30 metres (3 bus lengths) away.
• Female elk can be especially aggressive during calving season (May and June).
• Male elk can be aggressive during the autumn rut (September to October).
• Learn more about elk safety.

Please report all aggressive elk encounters immediately to 403-591-7755.

Where: Bow Corridor Trail Trail , Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park , Heart Creek Day Use , Heart Creek Trail , Heart Creek Bunker Trail, Trans Canada Trail

A Bear Warning has been put in place at Heart Creek Trail, Heart Creek Bunker Trail and the Trans Canada Trail between the Heart Creek bunker and the access to Grant MacEwan peak/Acephale climbing area because numerous black bears, including a black bear sow and cubs-of-the-year, have been seen in the area and in close proximity to the above trails.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

• Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
• Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
• Keep your pet on a leash.
• Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible and know how to use it.
• Secure attractants like food, garbage, pet food and any scented items in hard sided vehicles or bear proof lockers.
• Learn more about bear safety.

Where: Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park , Heart Creek Interpretive Trail

The Heart Creek Interpretive Trail may be impassible/difficult to pass due to high water levels from recent rainfall.

Effective Date: May 25, 2026 - Until Further Notice

Where: Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park , Heart Creek Trail , Heart Creek Interpretive Trail , Quaite Creek Trail , Quaite Valley Backcountry Campground

Visitors may encounter active trail work on the Heart Creek Trail, Quaite Creek Trail, and the section of the Trans Canada Trail between the Heart Creek and Quaite Creek Trails from May 25 through June 19, 2026, or until further notice. Work will include trail improvements, and general trail maintenance to enhance safety and trail conditions.

Trails will remain open, but users should expect:

• Intermittent delays
• Reduced trail width in active work zones
• Presence of crews and equipment
• Some sections may be temporarily rerouted or held while work is underway

For your safety and the safety of crews:

• Obey all posted signage and instructions from workers
• Use caution when passing through active work areas
• Be prepared to wait for safe passage when directed
