Kananaskis Valley

Updated: May 16, 2026

Updated: May 16, 2026 | Print Report

May 16th: A significant amount of wet snow is covering the trails. Expect slippery, wet and muddy conditions.

People seeking alpine objectives should keep in mind that spring avalanches are a potential hazard. Pay close attention to freezing levels, solar radiation and new precipitation (either as rain or snow) at this time of year as avalanche danger has lots of variables.

Be aware of closures in the area and check advisories before you go.

    Closures:

    • O’Shaughnessy Falls: Construction
    • Pigeon Mountain: Closed Dec 1 - Jun 15 for protection of critical winter range for elk and bighorn sheep.
    • West Wind Valley: Closed Dec 1 - Jun 15 for protection of critical winter range for elk and bighorn sheep.
    • Mt. Allan / Centennial Ridge Trail: Closed Apr 1 - Jun 21 for protection of bighorn sheep during sensitive birthing period.
    • Stoney Trail: Closed Apr 15 - Jun 15 from Jewel Bay Backcountry Campground south to Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area boundary, including Jewell Bay Backcountry Campground.

    Notes:

    • Be aware of avalanche conditions. Current conditions can be found at Avalanche Canada.
    • Practice wildlife safety. Bears are up and active. Travel in groups, make noise on the trail, and keep pets on leash. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is highly recommended, even in winter.
    • Caution is advised for natural hazards such as downed trees, washouts and missing bridges. Route-finding may be necessary. Please report any downed trees on the trails.
    • It's tick season! Make sure to check you and your pets when you get home. For best protection, use a bug repellent with DEET.
