Feb 12th: Grooming on Wednesday night took place under clear skies with the temperature a few degrees below zero (as low as -10 at the top of Blueberry). Expect older grooming to be quite icy in the morning, softening as the daytime temperatures rise.

It's cooled down in PLPP over the last few days, however strong winds and warm temperatures prior has left older grooming icy and scattered tree debris and "snow bombs" (at higher elevations) in some areas. Less icy conditions will exist on fresh grooming. There has been just trace amounts of snow at lower elevations over the last 5 weeks, though a little more has fallen at higher elevations. With the abundant December snow, there is generally a reasonable snow base in PLPP, especially at higher elevations, but the base is shrinking, and some hazards may exist, including a few uneven surfaces, possible exposed ground, and possible slush or ice (the ground and marshy areas are warmer than normal for this time of year). With the recent warm temperatures a few small patches of ice and some dirt are starting to come up in the marshes on Packers Trail.

Be aware that snowshoe trails crossing over creeks and wet areas could have some open water and thin ice, with risk of breaking through.

Always come prepared for a variety of conditions, that can change suddenly throughout the day. You may want to consider bringing hiking poles, micro spikes, toques, gloves and multiple layers.

    Annual Road Closures:

Highway #40: Closed Dec 1 - Jun 14, from Kananaskis Lakes Trail to Highwood House Junction.

    Notes:

    • Be aware of avalanche conditions. Current conditions can be found at Avalanche Canada.
    • Be Wildlife Aware. Travel in groups, make noise on the trail, and keep pets on leash. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is highly recommended, even in winter.
    • Caution is advised for natural hazards such as downed trees. Please report any downed trees on the trails.
    • Be sure not to overestimate your ability when planning your trip: Humility can be a life saver. Plan for rapidly changing conditions and bring extra clothing.

    Snow Depths:

    Highwood Pass: 111 cm

    Aster Lake: 157 cm

    Burstall Pass: 148 cm

    Mud Lake: 110 cm
