Mar 5th: Wednesday night's grooming was under partly cloudy skies with less than a trace of new snow accumulated during the grooming shift. High winds accompanied the 5-10 cm's of snow that fell on the weekend, so there will be drifting in areas.

All trails groomed on the 27th and 28th were set for the the annual Cookie race and both tracks favour race direction. Use caution if skiing race trails, especially if travelling opposite direction.  Trails that are still set for the race are as follows: the S section of Come Along, N to S; Lynx and parts of Pocaterra both directions.

With abundant snow in December, and a recent refresh, there is a decent snow base in PLPP, especially at higher elevations, however the base was starting to thin at low elevations before last weeks snowfall. The icy base from the long drought and warm weather is now well covered and the snow has generally remained cold, though there will be some icy or glazed areas that directly face the strong afternoon sun.

The ski trails in PLPP were not designed for, nor do they accommodate skate skiing, as there is not room to skate ski without ruining the classic tracks, which are machine set once a week on each trail. For skate skiing, choose one of the many areas in the region that are suited for the activity, such as Mt Shark or the CNC.

Be aware that snowshoe trails crossing over creeks and wet areas could have some open water and thin ice, with risk of breaking through.

Always come prepared for a variety of conditions, that can change suddenly throughout the day. You may want to consider bringing hiking poles, micro spikes, toques, gloves and multiple layers.

    Annual Road Closures:

Highway #40: Closed Dec 1 - Jun 14, from Kananaskis Lakes Trail to Highwood House Junction.

    Notes:

    • Be aware of avalanche conditions. Current conditions can be found at Avalanche Canada.
    • Be Wildlife Aware. Travel in groups, make noise on the trail, and keep pets on leash. Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it is highly recommended, even in winter.
    • Caution is advised for natural hazards such as downed trees. Please report any downed trees on the trails.
    • Be sure not to overestimate your ability when planning your trip: Humility can be a life saver. Plan for rapidly changing conditions and bring extra clothing.

    Snow Depths:

    Highwood Pass: 142 cm

    Aster Lake: 189 cm

    Burstall Pass: 174 cm

    Mud Lake: 130 cm
