The High Rockies Trail is a portion of the Trans Canada Trail, or "The Great Trail" running between Goat Creek Day Use area in Spray Valley Provincial Park and the AB/BC border in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.
The northern end of this this trail begins at the Goat Creek Day Use area in Spray Valley Provincial Park, 1 km from the Banff National Park Boundary. Traversing through open meadows the trail crosses the Three Sisters Dam (Spray Lakes Reservoir) and continues south along the eastern side of the Spray Lakes Reservoir. Upon reaching the Driftwood Day Use area, the trail crosses the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail (Road)/Hwy 742 and continues south beyond the Sawmill Day Use area in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, to once again cross back to the west side of the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail (Road)/Hwy 742 at the Pocaterra Dam (just north of Peninsula Day Use) at the north end of Lower Kananaskis Lake.
The landscape along this long route is diverse with some sections travelling through thick forests and others climbing up and over massive rock slides, providing outstanding views across the valley. While much of the trail is new-build, many sections utilize pre-existing trails such as the lowest sections of Buller Pass, Rummel Lake, the Chester Lake Trail, the Chester-Sawmill Trails network and in the future, significant sections of the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Trails Network.
A portion of the trail is closed Nov. 1 to May 1. annually between Spray Lakes Day Use area and Buller Pass due to Highway Avalanche Control.
The bridge over Blackshale Creek in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is closed in winter. The bypass trail remains open for this section of the trail.
Park and access the High Rockies trail for the Black Shale Suspension Bridge from the Black Prince Day Use; Use the South Spray Lakes Map for trail directions and navigation. This section to the bridge is 6.8 km return.
Note: Between Nov. 1 and May 1 the trail is closed through the Buller Slide Path due to Highway Avalanche Control.
