Select roads, campgrounds, day-use areas, trails, and areas of Kananaskis Country will be temporarily closed before, during, and after the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in June. Check for closures before you go.

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park your vehicle in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley.
  • Bear Warning - Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Campgrounds

    Effective:  June 18, 2025

      • Effective Date: June 18, 2025, until further notice.
      • Where: All campgrounds in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park facility zone.
      • Why: A black bear accessed and damaged an unoccupied tent at Boulton Creek Campground, which contained food attractants. It is uncertain if the bear received any food reward. A warning has been issued for the other campgrounds in the facility zone because of their proximity to Boulton Creek Campground. Recently, black bears have been spotted in the campground.

    Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Keep all attractants secure from bears including food, garbage, recycling, pet food and any other scented item. Never leave these items unattended.
    • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
    • Keep your pet on a leash.
    • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

  • Bear Closure - Boulton Creek Campground Loop A

    Effective:  June 17, 2025

      • Effective Date: June 17, 2025 until further notice
      • Where: Boulton Creek Campground Loop A
      • Why: A black bear accessed and damaged an unoccupied tent that contained attractants. 

    Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Keep all attractants secure from bears including food, garbage, recycling, pet food and any other scented item. Never leave these items unattended.
    • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
    • Keep your pet on a leash.
    • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

  • Bear Closure - Portion of Peter Lougheed Paved Trail

    Effective:  June 14, 2025

      • Effective Date: June 14, 2025, until further notice.
      • Where: A portion of Peter Lougheed Paved Trail and shoreline between Lower Lake Campground and Sarrail Campground.
      • Why: A grizzly bear is feeding on a carcass in the area.

    Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Keep all attractants secure from bears including food, garbage, recycling, pet food and any other scented item. Never leave these items unattended.
    • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
    • Keep your pet on a leash.
    • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

  • Notice - Campground Access due to G7 Summit

    Effective:  June 10, 2025

      These campground will remain open during the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis. From June 10 – 18, they can only be accessed via Highway 742 (Smith-Dorrien Trail) due to the closure of Highway 40 north from June 10 – 18 and the extended closure of Highwood Pass which opens on June 21.

      Vehicles towing trailers (including RVs) and low-clearance vehicles are advised not to travel via the Highway 742 (Smith- Dorrien Trail) due to steep and narrow road segments, especially up the Canmore Hill.

  • Notice - Elbow Lake Campground Access due to G7 Summit

    Effective:  June 10, 2025

      Due to the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Highwood Pass will not open until June 21.

      While Elbow Lake backcountry campground will remain open, it can only be accessed from Highway 66 until June 21 via the Little Elbow Trailhead.

      Please be advised that hiking to Elbow Lake from this access point would be over 30 kilometers, including travel over the Tombstone Pass which can still be covered in snowpack into July. This route is not recommended.

      • Effective Date: June 8, 2025 until further notice.
      • Where: Burstall Pass trail and surrounding area.
      • Why: A close encounter and multiple sightings of a grizzly bear near the trailhead.

    Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Keep all attractants secure from bears including food, garbage, recycling, pet food and any other scented item. Never leave these items unattended.

      • Why: Multiple bears frequenting the area.

      • Effective Date: Seasonal closure until further notice
      • Where: Valleyview Road from Elpoca Day Use Area to HWY 40 (South) near Little Highwood Day Use Area, including Valleyview Day Use Areas.
      • Why: Frequent bear activity in this area
