Where: 1982 Canadian Mount Everest Expedition Interpretive Trail , Peter Lougheed Provincial Park , Upper Lake Trail

Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit trail from North Interlakes Trailhead to White Spruce Day Use Area is closed until further notice due to multiple grizzly bears with cubs frequenting the area. This closure includes Everest Expedition Trail, and all portions of the lake shoreline (see map).

White Spruce Day Use Area remains open for vehicle parking.

Access to the Point or Aster Lake Backcountry Campgrounds are not affected.

Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

• Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
• Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
• Keep your pet on a leash.
• Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible and know how to use it.
• Secure attractants like food, garbage, pet food and any scented items in hard sided vehicles or bear proof lockers.

Access: Paved bike path leading from Canyon campground to Sarrail campground (does not include portion of campground roads through Lower Lake campground).

Effective Date: July 6, 2026 - Until Further Notice

Where: Peter Lougheed Provincial Park , Pocaterra Trail , Pocaterra Cirque, Pocaterra Ridge & Surrounding area

Please be advised that Alberta Forestry and Parks will be completing trail construction work and reclamation in and around Pocaterra Cirque Trail within Peter Lougheed Provincial Park between July 6 and Fall 2026, or until further notice. Construction crews will be on site beginning July 6, 2026.

To safely complete this work, the areas outlined in red on the attached map will be temporarily closed for the duration of construction.

The temporary closure is necessary to:

• Protect public safety while construction crews and heavy equipment are active on the trail.
• Allow trail construction and reclamation work to proceed safely and efficiently, minimizing the overall duration of the closure.
• Protect newly reclaimed alpine vegetation and restoration areas while they are being established.

Please note:

• Highwood Meadows Day Use Area will remain open throughout construction.
• Alternative hiking opportunities during the closure include Ptarmigan Cirque, Rawson Lake, Chester Lake, Heart Creek, Picklejar Lakes, and Burstall Pass, subject to current road conditions, trail closures and advisories. Visitors are encouraged to check current conditions before travelling to the area.

Conservation Officers will enforce the area closure under the Provincial Parks Act. Do not cross construction barriers and follow all signage.

Visitors looking for alternatives can call the Kananaskis Information Line at 1-403-678-0760 or stop by a Kananaskis Information Centre.

Follow the direction of all signage and personnel in the area and stay out of active construction zones.

Grizzly bear with cubs feeding in and frequenting the area surrounding Rawson Lake Trail and Sarrail Ridge route.

A Bear Warning is in place for all facilities and trails along the Kananaskis Lakes Trail (KLT) Road between Highway 40 and Upper Kananaskis Lake, and along the Spray Road between the KLT and Lower Kananaskis Lake.

Grizzly bears, including multiple bears with cubs of varying ages, are frequenting campgrounds and trails. A grizzly bear with her first litter of cubs has been exhibiting defensive behavior when surprised by people at close range. During these surprise encounters, she has perceived people as a threat and responded with bluff charges to warn them to back away and give her space.

If you choose to visit this area, follow these recommendations to help reduce the risk of a surprise encounter with a bear:

• Make plenty of noise and travel in tight groups of four or more people.
• Stay aware of your surroundings, especially in areas with poor visibility. Watch and listen for bears and signs of bear activity.
• Keep pets on a short leash at all times.
• Carry bear spray, keep it readily accessible, and know how to use it.
• Avoid activities that involve travelling at high speed, such as running or cycling, as they increase the likelihood of a surprise encounter.

If you have a surprise encounter with a bear showing signs of stress:

• Stay calm. Do not run. Running can trigger a chase response and may increase the risk of escalation.
• Do not shout. Speak in a calm, low voice so the bear can recognize you as a person.
• Ready your bear spray. Remove the safety clip and be prepared to use it if the bear continues to approach. Use it when the bear is within approximately one car length (about 5 metres/16 feet).
• Stay together as a group. Group tightly together and slowly back away to increase the distance between you and the bear.
• Give the bear a clear escape route. Avoid blocking the bear's travel path or separating the bear from her cubs.

The State of Local Emergency for Kananaskis has ended.

Crews are conducting detailed assessments of trails, campgrounds, day-use areas, roads and other infrastructure impacted by flooding and high water. While access has been restored to many areas, numerous backcountry campgrounds, trails and day use areas remain closed while damage is assessed, and repairs are planned.

Visitors are reminded use extreme caution around waterways, obey all posted signs, barricades and closures. Please stay off closed trails and out of restricted areas to protect your safety, allow crews to complete their work, and help prevent further damage to already vulnerable landscapes and infrastructure.

If you encounter hazards or damage after an area has reopened, only proceed with your recreation if safe to do so. Any hazards or damage discovered can be reported via email at AlbertaParks.ca/ContactUs. Include location details and photos if possible.

Highway 40: Road access has been reestablished for visitors travelling HWY 742 up to the rockslide closure and both directions along HWY 40, including HWY 40 South. Access across the Evan Thomas Bridge is open with work from highway crews continuing onsite. Travellers are encouraged to check 511 Alberta for the most up to date information.

Please be aware that paving refurbishment is scheduled to occur at various locations throughout Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. The areas listed below will be affected, with an overall construction duration anticipated from early June to late July 2026 or until further notice. Please note that dates below are approximate (subject to change):

• Upper Lake (June 3–29)
• Mt. Sarrail (June 3-29)
• White Spruce (June 3-17)
• North Interlakes (June 8-25)
• Boulton Creek Road (June 3-29)
• Boulton Creek Bridge (June 3-26)
• Lower Lake Campground (June 10-25)
• Pocaterra (June 11 and June 29)
• Black Prince (June 15-29)

Floating Work (gravel tie-ins, line painting and signage installation): all areas, completed as crews are available from June 8-July 8, 2026.

Refer to the Advisory Maps enclosed for construction limits. To facilitate construction activities, heavy equipment will be working on site and single lane traffic will be in temporary effect.

Spray Lakes West Campground is open, however it is only accessible via Hwy 40 South and the unpaved portion of Hwy 742 N via Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

The Boulton Creek Campground dump station is now open as a dry dump only (no water). Potable water is still available at Canyon Dump Station.
