Forest tent caterpillars are a natural part of the boreal forest ecosystem. They are always present in the boreal forest, but about every 10 years they experience a population boom.
- Caterpillars are currently in their final instar stage, and are eating a lot of leaves in order to prepare for metamorphosis into their adult form, a brown moth.
- During a population boom, they can denude aspen and willow trees, their favourite foods. The trees generally survive and put out a flush of new leaves once the caterpillars are gone.
- The caterpillars are currently present in large numbers throughout the park, but will soon build their cocoons.
