Marten River Day Use

Where: Marten River Campground , Marten River Day Use

Details: You are advised that Schistosome dermatitis, commonly known as Swimmer’s Itch, has been reported at this beach. This condition results from contact with a water parasite that causes localized skin irritation. Itching usually begins 10 to 30 minutes after exposure and can last two to three days depending on your particular sensitivity. Precautions you can take to avoid or limit exposure to Swimmer’s Itch include:
  • Avoid spending long periods of time in the water.
  • Shower (if available) and briskly rub the skin with a towel immediately after leaving the water. Do not leave visible drops of water on your skin.
  • Do not attract birds by feeding them in areas where people are swimming.
  • Avoid swimming in areas where Swimmer’s Itch is a problem.
Should you contract Swimmers’ Itch, some relief may be obtained by applying appropriate creams or lotions to the affected areas. Consult your doctor for further advice. Marten River Day Use Area is located between the Marten River Group Use Area and Marten River Campground. From here, you can access the Jack Pine Trail, the Marten River Campground Beach Trail, the hand boat launch, and a beautiful natural sand beach. If you turn right at the bottom of the path to the boat launch, you’ll reach the dog-friendly beach, where dogs are allowed on leashes. Turn left, and you’re on the people-only section of the beach. Picnic tables, a group use firepit, and the Marten River Amphitheatre are also located here, next to the parking lot. Check out the fun public programs that happen here several days a week in July and August!  

The hand boat launch is only for canoes, kayaks, and similar small boats that you can carry. For heavier boats, please use the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River public boat launch just north of the Town of Slave Lake

Did you forget to bring your lifejacket? Borrow one from the lifejacket loaner station located near the boat launch.
