Details: This advisory is for Camper's Beach Day Use Area on Big Island of Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park.

The water at this location is tested weekly by Alberta Health Services. Our most recent test has produced fecal indicator bacteria levels that exceed the recommended limits. Additional information can be found online at AHS Health Advisories

Contact with these waters may cause illness, and swimming is not recommended.

Never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any lake or reservoir, at any time. Water-borne organisms, including fecal bacteria, can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

For more information on beach monitoring, please contact Alberta Health Services at 811.

Details:

Please be advised that Cyanobacterial (Blue-Green Algae) has been identified in the water at this location. Additional information can be found online at AHS Health Advisories

Visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid all contact with cyanobacterial blooms. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible.
  • Do not swim or wade or allow your pets to swim or wade in any areas where cyanobacteria is visible.
  • Do not feed whole fish or fish trimmings from this lake to your pets.
  • Consider limiting human consumption of whole fish and fish trimmings from this lake, as it is known that fish may store toxins in their liver. People can safely consume fish fillets from this lake.

As always, visitors and residents are reminded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any recreational body of water at any time. Boiling this water will not remove the toxins produced by cyanobacteria. An alternative source of drinking water should also be provided for pets and livestock while this advisory is active.

Weather and wind conditions can cause algae blooms to move from one location in the lake to another. As such, this advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

Please note: Waters in which the cyanobacterial bloom is NOT visible can still be used for recreational purposes, even while this Health Advisory is in place.

The Sir Winston Churchill Tipis are located 11 km northeast of Lac La Biche on Long Island, just off the main park road along Nevill Drive. For those seeking a true “oneness with nature” experience, staying in a tipi is the perfect choice. Each tipi features lodgepole pine poles, a canvas covering, and a raised deck to keep the interior clean and dry. These lakefront tipi sites provide access to a building with private, fully serviced bathrooms and an enclosed cookhouse.

Campers can check in for their tipi stay at the Comfort Camping Registration Building without entering the main campground. This building also offers groceries, camping supplies, and firewood. A second store, the Campground Store on Big Island, provides non-motorized boat rentals (canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards) as well as hard-scoop ice cream.

Big Island also offers a variety of recreational amenities, including an amphitheatre with interpretive programming and several Day Use Areas with scenic viewpoints, beaches, swimming spots, and a network of trails to explore.

  • There are 4 single raised platform beds with mattresses for you to sleep on that may be re-arranged.
  • Tipis are an adventure. There in an interior lining from the top where the tipi poles extend out of the tipi to the bottom. The doors are not weather or bug proof. When it rains water naturally runs down the inside of the poles and may drip down on the beds. The best way to avoid this is by moving your bed between the poles. Unfortunately we can’t guarantee that you won’t get wet.
