The brilliant blue waters of Grizzly and Ruby Lake contrast with the purple argillite cliffs of Barnaby Ridge, creating picturesque location for backcountry camping. After approximately 11 km of hiking up a steep incline, follow the forked path right to go to Grizzly Lake, or left to go to Ruby Lake.
A major crossing of the South Castle River is required, and it is recommended to wait until late summer to cross. In early autumn, the golden larch trees at Ruby Lake are worth the trek to this subalpine cirque.
An alternative route from the Syncline Trail network adds significant distance, but eliminates the South Castle River crossing. For this alternate route, follow the Ram’s Head trail from the Truck Box meadow at the Syncline Trail network.
