Outdoor Essentials - Navigation, Shelter, and Fire

There are a few things everyone should know before venturing into the wild.  Let us spark your students interest in the outdoors with our suite of essentials including Navigation, Shelter Building, and Fire Lighting.  Each of these modules is approximately 1 hour long and can be delivered consecutively within a single day, or they can be added as single programs with other environmental education programs.

Navigation focuses on landscape awareness, mapping, and compasses.  Students begin with basic instruction and proceed to level up to an introductory orienteering course.  Focusing on compass use allows for discussion of earth materials and magnets and builds numeracy skills.

Shelter building includes introductory rope and knot work before proceeding into our shelter building area.  In the shelter building area, participants will be given basic materials to construct a shelter that will save them from a scenario.  Alternatively, our fleet of tents can be brought out to give students the opportunity to set up a real tent as if they were staying the night in a campsite.

Fire lighting is one of our most popular programs.  Where else do you get to learn about safe fires, the fire triangle, types of fuel, and strategies the park uses to mitigate wildfire danger.  Participants will collect local materials and light their own fires before being issued a challenge.  This program is subject to local fire bans and will only run when conditions are appropriate.
