Athabasca Viewpoint is one of three staging areas for those wishing to explore Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park. This staging area features an outhouse and a small parking area located at the end of a narrow road off Highway 661. Next to the parking lot, visitors can find benches at the top of the sandhill that overlook the Athabasca River’s horseshoe curve and the large flats across the river.
Lookout Loop Trail is located here. The 3.9 kilometre trail takes you to a viewpoint above Clearwater Creek. Enjoy views across the Athabasca River towards Misty Ridge Ski Hill and Vega Natural Area. Those looking for fish can also hike to the mouth of Clearwater Creek. Clearwater Creek separates the trails that begin at this Day Use Area from other trails in the park, and there are no connecting trails. View the trail map here.
