Location: located on the northwest shore of Sylvan Lake, approximately 10 km northeast of Eckville
Birding: Canada's largest woodpecker, the pileated woodpecker, is found in this natural area. Old-growth tree stands here are host to the wood-boring insects and larvae that the woodpeckers feed on. The pileated woodpecker is not known to nest here because, although the area's mature deciduous forest provides suitable nesting cavities, it is too small to provide a year-round home range. This area is also excellent for viewing waterfowl.
This is a very small parcel of land. Hunters should be aware of the distance to nearby residences and camping units, as well as the safety and activities of other recreational users

| Natural Region Description | This area is part of the southern-most extension of Alberta's boreal forest. Numerous boreal plants (including three species of woodland fern) grow here at their known lowland southern limits. Within the site are a number of fascinating biophysical features. A levee parallels the shoreline of the natural area sheltering a special lagoon-like habitat - a mosaic of willow shrubbery and reed beds containing many marsh plant species and providing excellent birdwatching opportunities. |
