COVID-19 Updates: Taking steps to return to normal.

  • Bear Warning - Highway 40 South of Winter Gate Closure

    Effective:  May 12, 2022

      • Effective Date: May 12, 2022 until further notice
      • Where: Highway 40 south of winter gate closure
      • Why: A grizzly bear bluff charged a cyclist on the road.

    Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
    • Keep your pet on a leash.
    • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.
    • Learn more about bear safety on our webpage or at WildSmart.

    Please report all bear sightings immediately to 403-591-7755.

  • Closure - Chester Lake Trails

    Effective:  May 1, 2022

      • Effective Date: May 01 to June 29, 2022
      • Where: Chester Lake Trail
      • Why: Annual Seasonal Closure due to spring thaw conditions.

  • Construction Closure - Elkwood Campground Comfort Station

    Effective:  June 18, 2021

      Effective Date: June 18, 2021 until further notice

      Where: Elkwood Campground in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

      Why: Showers and flush toilet facilities in Elkwood Campground are closed due to construction and upgrades at the sewage treatment plant.

  • Construction Closure - William Watson Day Lodge

    Effective:  July 27, 2020

      UPDATE May 18, 2022:

      Beginning on Tuesday, May 24 at 9 a.m., Albertans with disabilities and terminal illnesses will be able to book up to 120 days in advance for arrival dates beginning June 6, 2022.

      Alberta’s government invested more than $6 million to enhance visitor experiences and bring the facility up to today’s accessibility standards. William Watson Lodge’s operations are subsidized by revenues from the Kananaskis Conservation Pass, which supports visitor experiences, conservation, recreation, public safety and services across Kananaskis Country and the Bow Valley Corridor.

  • Closure - Valleyview Road

    Effective:  May 31, 2020

      • Effective Date: Seasonal closure until further notice
      • Where: Valleyview Road from Elpoca Day Use Area to HWY 40 (South) near Little Highwood Day Use Area, including Valleyview Day Use Areas.
      • Why: Frequent bear activity in this area
