A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park your vehicle in Kananaskis and the Bow Valley.
  • Bear Warning - Canmore Nordic Centre

    Effective:  June 13, 2024

      • Effective Date: June 13, 2024, until further notice
      • Where: Canmore Nordic Centre.
      • Why: Numerous black bears have been observed in the area.

    Although an advisory is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in the Kananaskis Region at any time. To avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

    • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
    • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
    • Keep your pet on a leash.
    • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.

    Please report all bear sightings immediately to 403-591-7755.

  • Construction Closure - Grassi Lakes Climbing Area Parking Lot

    Effective:  June 6, 2024

      • Effective Date: June 6th, 2024 until further notice 
      • Where: Grassi Lake’s climbers parking lot along Highway 742 
      • Why: Construction and road work in the area.

  • Wildlife Closure - Canmore Engine Bridge Island

    Effective:  May 29, 2024

      • Effective Date: May 29, 2024, until further notice
      • Where: South half of the Engine Bridge Island in the Canmore Nordic Center Provincial Park and Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park.
      • Why: A female Elk with a Calf in the area has been charging at multiple groups of people. Female elk can be especially aggressive during the May – June calving season.

       

  • Construction Advisory - Grassi Lakes Trails & Day Use Area

    Effective:  May 21, 2024   Updated:  June 7, 2024

      • Effective Date: VARIOUS - May 21 to July 31, or until further notice
      • Where: Grassi Lakes Trails & Day Use Area.
      • Why: The Grassi Lakes trails will be undergoing construction for trail drainage work to mitigate erosion problems. Work includes re-establishing drainage ditches, up-sizing of culverts and repair work to the trail surface. 

        We recognize the construction and associated closures are inconvenient; however, they are necessary.

        Visitors looking for alternatives can call the Kananaskis Information Line at (403) 678-0760, or stop by a Kananaskis Information Centre.

        Temporary Intermittent Trail Closures to Accommodate Construction

        • June 7 – July 31, 2024
        • Detours and closures will be ongoing during this project. Access to the lakes will still be available via one of the two trails.
        • Note that during construction, the Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail is open for use. The Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail contains steep sections and stairs. Users will be required to navigate these steep stairs and sections both up and down the trail.
        • Please obey all signs, closures and detours.

  • Wildlife Closure - Grassi Lakes Climbing Routes

    Effective:  March 29, 2024   Updated:  June 4, 2024

      • Effective Date: March 29, 2024 until further notice
      • Where: Left side of the Graceland rock climbing area due to an owl nesting site near the following climbing routes on Grassi Lakes:
        • You Ain’t Nothing But a Hang Dog
        • Memphis
        • It’s Now or Never 
      • Why: To minimize disturbances to an owl nesting site.
